Adenoid is a normal structure its presence does not need treatment

When there is disease of adenoids we need to treat

Snoring and mouthbreathing is most common

Child might have hearing difficulty due to fluid in ear

Attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) is associated sleep apnoea

X rays or endoscopy of nose


How is adenoid hypertrophy treated?

Treatment for adenoid hypertrophy is aimed to stop mouth breathing and improve ear function

First give a trial of medical treatment to achieve the goals

If medical option fails need to do adenoidectomy


Wont adenoids disappear by 11 yrs then why not wait?

Normal adenoid disappear by 11 yrs not ones which have disease

Children almost always breath through their nose, breathing through mouth is not natural

Normal development of face, teeth, nose and sinuses needs nasal breathing

More the time child continues mouthbreathing worse the develomental effects


How is adenoidectomy done?

under endoscopic guidance using debrider or Coblation adenoid is removed

Its a painless procedure


Why is tonsil surgery done with adenoidectomy?

Adenoidectomy may lead to increase in tonsil size which might block airway

Tonsil needed to be removed when there is recurrent infection

Enlarged tonsils which are threat to block can be partially removed
